Congress chartered the American Legion in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of veterans of World War I into one of the largest nonprofit groups in the United States. Today, membership stands at nearly 3 million in 14,000 posts worldwide.
Over the years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans and produced many important programs for children and youth. Post 249 and it’s affiliated American Legion Auxiliary Unit 249 and our Sons of the American Legion Squadron 249 continue this tradition by providing a wide range of services to our community, area veterans, service personnel and their families.
Fundraising efforts by Post 249, Squadron 249 and Unit 249 allow us to provide support for veterans and area residents on active military duty. In addition, Post 249 sponsors citizenship, sports and Americanism programs for youth and provides scholarships for high school seniors from both Parsippany High and Parsippany Hills High School.
New members — both veterans and active service personnel — are invited to join Post 249 at any time. If you are on active duty or a veteran of any of the US armed services, and served during a World War, the Korean or Vietnam Wars, or conflicts in Grenada, Lebanon, Panama or the Persian Gulf (up to the present including Afghanistan and Iraq) you are eligible for membership in The American Legion; a PDF copy of the membership application is available online.
